I am not good at Twenty20 cricket: Pietersen

LONDON: The most expensive IPL player and flamboyant England batsman Kevin Pietersen has confessed he is not good at playing the hugely popular Twenty20 format but vowed to make amends during in the World Championships, beginning next week.

"I'm not very good at Twenty20 cricket, am I?" Pietersen said on the eve of the World T20 Championships in England.

"The more you play T20 cricket the better you become and I haven't played a lot of it, and I'm not very good at it," he was quoted as saying by 'The Mirror'.

Pietersen, who was not a part of the inaugural edition of IPL, played only six matches in the IPL-II in South Africa.

Pietersen disclosed he had developed new theories to suit his batting to the quickest format of the game.

"I just know that I will get much better at it. I've worked out some new theories about how to go about my batting in T20 and that will make a difference, hopefully starting next week!" he said.

The 28-year-old ex-England captain, who failed to impress as the Royal Challengers Bangalore captain in IPL, said he loved the experience.

"I made a great captain didn't I," Pietersen said in a lighter vein.

"We won two out of six when I was there and then Anil Kumble took over and they got to the final.

"People are going to take pot shots at me over the IPL and the money I earned in two weeks, but it was such a great experience. I loved it," he said.

He sought to explain the reason behind gaffes like not knowing the names of his RCB team members even at time of toss in IPL.

"To captain the side four days after arriving and not knowing what some of the guys did and not knowing most of their names made it a huge task for me. I wasn't as focused on my batting as I was on trying to learn guys names and what they did," he said.

It was less than two years ago that Pietersen called Twenty20 a 'silly game with silly shots' but he admits his attitude to the game has since changed.

Flintoff, Pietersen sold at record price

England's star duo of Andrew Flintoff, Kevin Pietersen broke the Indian Premier League record for the highest-paid player after they were sold for US $ 1.55 million each in the players's auction for the second season held in Goa Friday.

All-rounder Flintoff was purchased by Chennai Super Kings, while England former captain Pietersen, as expected, was snapped up Vijay Mallya-owned Bangalore Royal Challengers.

India captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni the previous record at $1.5 million that Chennai paid for him last year.

Pietersen's bid started at $1.35 million, while Flintoff's base price was $950,000 and the duo would no doubt be rejoicing in the Caribbean after getting such a high signing amount.

Amongst the other players sold was South Africa's rising star Jean Paul Duminy who was purchased by Mumbai Indians a whopping $ 950,000 after starting with a base price of $300,000.

Australia bowler Shaun Tait bought by IPL champions Rajasthan Royals for $ 375,000 to replace Sohail Tanvir, who emerged as the highest-wicket last year.

Only four players were sold in the first round of the auction and 13 players now remain in the fray.

Pietersen is the top dog at IPL auction

Kevin Pietersen leads the price list when the race for the second phase of the IPL auction takes place on February 6th in Goa after his base price was pegged at $1.35m. Aussie vice captain Michael Clarke came in second after he was fixed at $1m and England all rounder Andrew Flintoff came in third at $950,000.

JP Duminy's stupendous exploits down under got him a minimum price tag of US$300,000, after the IPL list was pruned to 43 from 111 on Monday. The new list has only 43 players- and includes 15 from Australia, four from Bangladesh, seven from England, three from New Zealand, five from South Africa, four from Sri Lanka, and five from the West Indies.

Each franchise has a maximum of US$2m to spend on their overseas signings in the auction. Lalit Modi, the IPL commissioner, said the franchises with Pakistan players on their roster would be allowed to use money equal to the cost of the player to make purchases after the auction. "The Pakistan players have a three-year contract with the franchises and the only reason of their unavailability could be injuries. But since that is not the case here, we will have to look at the legal aspect of the issue," Modi said. "The spots for Pakistan players will be freed up and the money they invested on these players last year would be made automatically available post auction, so that the teams can buy new replacement players."

The new group also includes ten players who were not on the original one: Aaron Bird, Brett Geeves, Daniel Harris, Dominic Thornley, Jon Moss, Phil Jaques, Steven Smith, Samit Patel, Chamara Kapugedera and Jerome Taylor.
