Yuvi hattrick sees Punjab go through

Johannesburg, May 17: Yuvraj Singh produced his second hat-trick of the tournament to guide Kings XI Punjab to a much needed one-run victory over Deccan Chargers Hyderabad in a thrilling Indian Premier League (IPL) encounter here today.

The Punjab skipper picked up the crucial wickets of Herschelle Gibbs, Andrew Symonds and Venugopal Rao to produce glowing figures of three for 13 in his four overs which more than made up for an indifferent effort with the bat and also earned him the man-of-the-match award.
A heroic effort from Rohit Sharma (42) took the Chargers within sniffing distance of a win but the Kings XI held on by the skin of their teeth.

Punjab desparately needed a win in order to stay in the race for a semi-final spot. They have succeeded in their quest and now have 14 points from 13 matches to rise two spots to fourth on the points table.

Deccan also have 14 points from 13 games and continue to be third on the table.
Needing 135 runs for victory, the Chargers were off to a sizzling start with Adam Gilchrist (23) and Herschelle Gibbs (26) smashing 30 runs off the first three overs.

The introduction of Romesh Powar brought immediate dividends with the off-spinner accounting for Gilchrist and Tirumalsetti Suman (0) with consecutive balls in his opening over.
Powar’s flighted delivery induced Gilchrist to come out of his crease only to see wicket-keeper Sangakkara dislodge the bails.

The next ball was a similar delivery which beat Suman to crash into the middle-stump.
The double blow saw the run rate dip a little with Gibbs and Symonds adopting a more cautious approach. PTI
