Reschedule matches, Chidambaram tells IPL
New Delhi: The Indian Premier League (IPL) should consider postponing the second edition of its Twenty20 cricket tournament, due to begin on April 10, Union Home Minister P. Chidambaram suggested on Tuesday.
Mr. Chidambaram told reporters that he had asked Home Secretary Madhukar Gupta to contact the organisers and discuss re-scheduling of the dates.
Security agencies had written to his Ministry suggesting postponement of the matches as it was not possible to provide the required security cover.

The Minister said holding the 45-day tournament could be a high security risk due to non-availability of paramilitary forces, which would be also deployed for election duties.
The tournament, to be staged in eight cities, will conclude on May 24 and the five-phase general elections are to be held between April 16 and May 13.
“It will be difficult to provide adequate paramilitary forces for election and security for the cricket matches,” Mr. Chidambaram said.
A meeting had been convened in North Block to review the security situation during the tournament and discuss possible dates, informed sources said. — PTI
