South Africa's Nicholls Steyn and Associates, hired by the Indian Premier League (IPL) to provide security solutions for the event, have approached a Jalandhar-based company, Laggar Industry Limited (LIL), for supplying 16 bullet-proof buses and 64 bullet-proof SUVs for the players and officials.
However, LIL may not accept the contract because they say it's not possible to get so many vehicles ready at such a short notice.
They also pointed out that given the upcoming general elections, they have other commitments to honour.
"Nicholls Steyn contacted us a week ago for making 16 buses and 64 SUVs. But we are yet to sign a contract with them.
Our problem is that we need at least two to three months to make so many vehicles. Then, we have other commitments and contracts with government agencies, which we can't ignore," Sunchit Sobti, LIL's director told TOI on Thursday.
When IPL was staged last year, the team owners hired non bullet-proof buses and some teams like Delhi Daredevils and Kolkata Knight Riders even branded them with team logos.
But these are different times and IPL does not want to take chances. If the South African firm fails to strike a deal with Laggar, the franchisees may be forced to hire buses which will be unmarked.
"The South African agency has also asked us if we could provide them vehicles on hire and even on that front, we have made no promises. Let's see if we can do something... we can surely make 10 to 15 cars ready before the IPL matches start," Sobti said.
The cost for bullet-proofing a bus comes to around Rs 40 to 50 lakh while for a car it's between Rs 10 to 12 lakh. Each bus has a capacity of 40 while a car can accommodate seven security personnel.
The Sobtis have been armouring cars of the politicians in their workshop for years. "We are armouring more cars this time than the last elections.
"Some cars have already been delivered whereas some are still under the process of getting armoured in the workshop," Sobti added.
