The IPL’s Reigning Team Captain Warne Talks Strategy

Going in to this year’s second edition of the IPL tournament as defending champions, Shane Warne, the defending team captain is already thinking and talking strategy reports Cricket360.com via this editorial. In this special review we bring you the tactics that Warne will be looking to employ this season so that his team can replicate last year’s success.
When asked about the auctions in Goa today and what his team would be looking to get out of it, Warne said, “We had long ago decided that there would be very few changes. Now that the Pakistan players are missing, there might be a couple more than we had initially hoped for. As I said, we have a strategy in place and we’ll try not to move too far away from that. We’re looking at a couple of players but at the same time, not sure about anybody. A bowler is what we require (with) Sohail Tanvir gone but I don’t really see the auction helping us on that front.”While a lot of the other teams will be looking to do what the Rajasthan Royals did, Warne is looking beyond this and thinking a few steps ahead to employ wholly different tactics. So while other franchises may be looking to do what Rajasthan Royals did last year; look for lesser known players rather than invest in big names, Warne is looking beyond this.It is not as if Warne is saying the big names don’t matter; it is his suggestion to the franchises for this auction is, “don’t put all your eggs in one basket. Think about value added players. The players they choose to represent their team should not just have potential but the willingness to go out and prove something. This is not just about throwing money, not at least in Indian conditions. There are a lot more things to consider, like what kind of a person the player is, does he have the ability to gel with the team and not just individual skills.”
