Would be happy to show Shilpa some tricks: Shane Warne

JOHANNESBURG: Rajasthan Royals captain Shane Warne would be happy to oblige team co-owner Shilpa Shetty, who had earlier indicated ignorance of the rules of Twenty20 cricket and alluded she would learn them from the skipper.

"I would be happy to show Shilpa some tricks," Warne said, to the amusement of an audience gathered.

"You haven't heard about the latest movie (South African captain and Rajasthan Royals teammate) Graeme (Smith) and I are starring in?" Warne asked in jest in response to a question.

"Shilpa, me and Graeme (in one movie)? You haven't heard about that one yet?" Warne continued.

"We're ready to sign a deal. If there's a deal for a Bollywood movie, we're in!"

On a more serious note, Warne said: "I think (the link to Bollywood) is great for cricket. We're lucky to have someone like Shilpa getting involved. I think that the match between Bollywood and cricket is very, very good."

"Bollywood has always been involved with cricket indirectly," added veteran record-holding cricketer.

I wanna go home: Irfaan to brother Yusuf

JOHANNESBURG: "I want to go home," Irfaan Pathan of the Kings XI Punjab said to his brother Yusuf of the Rajasthan Royals as the Indian Premier League (IPL) headed for the halfway mark.

Yusuf Pathan was reacting to a question about the rapport between the brothers playing in opposing teams and what they said to each other.

Warne commented on the strategy to mobilise Yusuf against Irfaan because he knew his brother so well: "That was obviously the plan -Yusuf would bowl to Irfan the other night and hopefully get him out but it didn't work out that way.

"So when Irfan was bowling to Yusuf we were hoping that Yusuf would smash him all over the park."

Warne was referring to the game at Centurion on Tuesday evening when the Rajasthan Royals won their second game of the series against Delhi Daredevils.

"Last year, when we played, Yusuf was batting and Irfan dropped him at mid-on," Warne said, adding in jest that he had done this "out of brotherly love".

Reacting to a question of how they played as young siblings, Yusuf said: "Just as we are playing now. Even when we were young and playing in the streets, Yusuf and I would be hitting each other all over," Irfan said.

"We both love cricket and our father has always been very supportive, coming to every match,"

Another member of the team, Dimitri Mascarenhas of England, was asked whether he thought that the traditional One-Day Internationals would disappear in the wake of the popularity of the Twenty20 format.

"I'm not sure if 50 overs will disappear altogether (although) I'm sure it will get played less because more people want to see Twenty20," Mascarenhas maintained.

"Personally, I like Twenty20 because it is great fun, shorter, more exciting and players get involved a lot more," he added.

Each Flintoff wicket in IPL has cost Rs 83 lakh!

They are the million-dollar men of this year's IPL, the stars who fetched the highest rates at the auction. But Kevin Pietersen and Andrew Flintoff haven't really lived up to the expectations of fans and franchisees.

Indeed, a quick calculation of value for money shows them trailing way behind players who were acquired for far less.

Flintoff had got injured during England's tour of the West Indies and there was much debate over whether he should play in the IPL at all.

He might now be wishing he hadn't. England's talismanic allrounder was smashed around while bowling and picked up just two wickets from three matches before he retired hurt -- well, returned home with yet another injury.

He would have got his full fee of $1.55 million only if he had been available for all 14 league matches. At a per match rate of $110,714, he will finish with $332,143 for playing three matches.

His two wickets thus came at a total cost of over $166,000, or Rs 83 lakh, each. Did someone say there's a recession out there?

Of course, in fairness to Flintoff, he also scored some runs. The average runs scored per wicket in IPL 2, up till the end of the Royal Challengers vs Knight Riders match, works out to 17.02.

In other words, each wicket is worth 17.02 runs. Flintoff has thus contributed a total of 96.04 points. When you divide his total match fee of $332,143, he ends up with a value of 3,458 on the value for money index.

To put that in perspective, a similar calculation for Lasith Malinga, the highest wicket-taker in the competition so far, would throw up a value of 473, implying that the Lankan slinger has proved a far better investment for his team (the lower the result of the total match fees divided by runs plus wickets, the higher the value for money).

The flamboyant Kevin Pietersen has, if anything, proved an even worse bargain than Flintoff. He's played six matches and taken four wickets, but has scored a total of just 93 runs.

Effectively, each run scored by him has cost his team $7,143, or over Rs 3.5 lakh. When you aggregate his runs plus wickets and divide his total match fees ($664,286) you get a value of 4,123, even worse than Flintoff's. And a long way off from the fantastic return of 498 posted by Matthew Hayden, the tournament's highest rungetter at the time of writing with an aggregate of 215 runs from four matches.

We are getting better by every game: Tendulkar

We are getting better by every game: Tendulkar

We are getting better by every game: Tendulkar Port Elizabeth, Apr 27 (PTI) Mumbai Indians skipper Sachin Tendulkar was happy the script went according to plan and felt they were improving in each match as they hammered the Kolkata Knight Riders by 92 runs in the Indian Premier League (IPL) match here Monday.

The batting maestro and his opening partner Sanath Jayasuriya set the St George's Park on fire with some blazing shots. Both raced to half centuries and Tendulkar credited the Sri Lankan for his innings.

"It was a good partnership. Sanath picked up the pace nicely," said Tendulkar, who was adjudged man of the match for his 45-ball 68.

However, the manner in which they batted, a 200 plus score looked well on course and Tendulkar admitted as much.

"Everything went according to plan but maybe 200 plus would have been a better total. We are getting better by every game," said the record runscorer in both Tests and one-dayers.

A dejected Knight Riders captain Brendon McCullum said they would have now to go back to the drawing board.

"We will have to pick ourselves and get back on track," said the New Zealander.

Mumbai Indians pacer Zaheer Khan said the opening partnership between Tendulkar and Jayasuriya set the tone.

"Sachin and Sanath, playing the way they did was amazing," said the India pacer. PTI RSM RAI

McCullum 'happy' to step aside if KKR don't make IPL semis

McCullum 'happy' to step aside if KKR don't make IPL semis

Durban, Apr 28 (PTI) With Kolkata Knight Riders' frustration mounting after every defeat, the struggling team's captain Brendon McCullum says he would be "happy to step aside" if the side fails to make the semifinals of the ongoing Indian Premier League here.

"If we don't make the semifinals then I am more than happy to step aside. To me it's about accountability as a captain," McCullum said after KKR succumbed to their fourth defeat in the five matches they have played so far.

"I know I am going to be judged by results, my team is going to be judged by results and if I am not able to inspire my team to at least give ourselves a chance atleast in the back-end of the tournament, I am more than happy to step aside come next season," he explained.

McCullum said the crushing loss to Mumbai Indians last night has left the team frustrated.

"It's frustrating. That's the word we have been using for the last week and a half. We were blown off the park at the top of the order by Sachin (Tendulkar) and Sanath Jayasuriya," he said.

Asked whether captaincy was taking a toll on his form with the bat, McCullum said, "I don't think captaincy has burdened me as such. I just don't think I have played as well as what I should. I am desperately keen to put out a winning contribution from myself to be able to help my team. PTI

Pathan, Smith power Royals to five-wicket win over Daredevils

Centurion, Apr 28 (PTI) Yusuf Pathan struck a blistering half century while Graeme Smith Graeme Smith muscled his way to a belligerent 42 to power Rajasthan Royals to a five wicket victory over Delhi Daredevils at the SuperSport Park here today.

Chasing a modest 144, Rajasthan Royals rode on Pathan's buccaneering 62 of 30 balls and Smith's sensible 42 off 46 balls to cruise to 147 for five in 18.3 overs to register their second victory of the tournament and end Daredevils winning run.

Elected to bat, earlier, a fighting half-century from AB de Villiers and some lusty hitting down the order from Daniel Vettori and Mithun Manhas helped Delhi Daredevils post 143 for seven after Rajasthan bowlers sent packing four Delhi top-order batsmen with the scoreboard reading 49.

The Royals started their run chase on a cautious note but were little unlucky as Rob Quiney (4) departed early lbw to Nehra, but TV replays clearly showed he hit the ball.

Swapnil Asnodkar (11), demoted from the opening position, showed glimpses of his last year's brilliance, picking up 10 runs off Pradeep Sangwan's first over before running himself out in search of a non-existent single.

Next man in Paul Valthaty (1) didn't trouble the scorers. Graeme Smith, on the other hand, played the role of a sheet anchor, but didn't get ample support from the other end. PTI

Top order should take responsibility: Warne

Cape Town, April 26: Rajasthan Royals skipper Shane Warne today asked his top-order batsmen to take responsibility if they have to salvage any chance of defending their title in the second edition of the Indian Premier League.

Rajasthan Royal lost their IPL tie against Kings XI Punjab by 27 runs here today after their top order collapsed within seven overs at a score of 36 runs.

“Our bowling and fielding were very good may be they got 10-15 extra. Chasing 140, we should have done that but unfortunately our top order failed.

“They bowled well but we just didn’t get our combination right as yet. Guys at the top are not doing the job, we have to look at that, the bowlers and fielders are doing there job.”
“The batting is not fine and guys have to take the responsibility and show how important the competition is for them, so hopefully we will get it right in the next game,” Warne said after the match.
Warne said if they could have put up a good batting display in the first five or six overs, they might have emerged as the winning side.

“This pitch has a history and so it would have been better batting first but then 140 is chasable, if we could have batted first five or six overs well we should have been being there.”
“We have been playing in the first half but we have not been batting well in the first 5-6 overs if we can do that we would surely be a tough force in the competition,” he said. Kings XI Punjab captain Yuvraj Singh lauded his team for a good overall display and especially praised Kumar Sangakkara and Irfan Pathan for their innings.

“After losing early wickets, Sangakkara and Irfan Pathan batted well and got us to a decent total. We needed a good partnership and after 10 overs we discussed how we have to go till the 20 overs and we defended it nicely by good bowling in the end,” Yuvraj said.

With S Sreesanth and Bret Lee out of the playing eleven, Yuvraj hoped to have them back and said they would look to keep the winning momentum going.
“I am looking forward for them to comeback. At the moment we are playing good cricket and after first two lose we got our combination right and we have won two matches, it is looking good for us,” he said.

Man of the match Kumar Sangakkara, who hit 60 off 51 balls to help Kings XI Punjab post a modest 139, said he was finding it difficult to gauge the new pacer Kamran Khan.

“It was quite different an innings. Actually, Kamran Khan was very difficult to pick up, he is a great talent. Took a few bowls to get used to him,” Sangakkara said. Sangakkara also praised Irfan Pathan for his 33-ball 39 run innings.

“He (Irfan) did most of the batting for us and I just made sure that we batted till the end. I kept batting positive and then Irfan came and got the momentum back into our side,” he said.
However, Sangakkara reckoned their are some areas which needs attention.

“We have to make sure that we execute our game plan much better. There has been some run outs so we have a few homework to do and hopefully we would keep the momentum going.” (PTI)

WC committee to meet today

Mumbai, April 27: The 2011 World Cup Organising Committee, headed by former BCCI President Sharad Pawar, will meet here tomorrow to revamp its structure as Pakistan no longer remains the co-hosts of the mega event.

The one-day conclave will also discuss new secretariat in place of Pakistan, who have been stripped of their 2011 WC hosting rights due to security concerns by the International Cricket Council.
“The Committee will be reconstituted and the new secretariat chosen at the meeting,” according to BCCI sources.

When the Organising Committee was formed two years ago, Pakistan Cricket Board’s representative was chosen as its convener and the secretariat was to be situated at Lahore with Pakistan being one of the co-hosts then. (PTI)

Sachin, Sanath guide Mumbai to victory

Port Elizabeth, April 27: Sachin Tendulkar and Sanath Jayasuriya turned on their charm and made mockery of Twenty20 cricket being a young man’s game as both posted breezy half-centuries to guide Mumbai Indians to a 92-run win over Kolkata Knight Riders in their Indian Premier League match here today.

The 36-year-old Tendulkar’s 45-ball 68 was laced with six boundaries and four sixes, including one that went over the park.

His opening partner, the 39-year-old Jayasuriya scored 52 off 32 balls with four sixes and two boundaries as the Mumbai Indians raced to 187 for six at St George’s Park.

Knight Riders opening pair of Chris Gayle and Brendon McCullum needed to match the veteran duo but disappointed as the Shah Rukh Khan-owned side capitulated for 95.

Former India skipper Sourav Ganguly and Australian Brad Hodge staged a brief fightback but once their 54-run partnership was brought to an end by Abhishek Nayar, it was one way traffic as Lasith Malinga ripped through the tail.

Ganguly topscored for the Knight Riders, with a 30-ball 34, hitting a six and three fours while Hodge scored 24 off 22 balls with the help of three boundaries.

Earlier, it was the right-left combination of Tendulkar and Jayasuriya that did all the damage. (PTI)

Rahul Dravid blessed with baby boy

Bangalore, April 27: Indian cricketer Rahul Dravid’s wife Vijeta gave birth to a son here Monday afternoon.
Dravid, who was playing for Bangalore Royal Challengers in the Indian Premier League (IPL) in South Africa, came back to be with his wife at the time of delivery of the couple’s second son. The former India captain, who has been in good form in the Twenty20 tournament, had informed the team management beforehand that he will not be available for the entire tournament. Royal Challengers team owner Vijay Mallya had stated this reason while replacing Dravid with Kevin Pietersen as captain. Pietersen, too, is available only till Wednesday as he flies back to England for the series against the West Indies. South African Jacques Kallis will be handling the captaincy after Pietersen. Captain Dhoni hints changes

Durban, April 27: Clearly unhappy with the lacklustre show of his non-performing bowlers, Chennai Super Kings skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni today said time is ripe to bring in some changes in the squad.

Today’s six-wicket defeat against Deccan Chargers left the last year’s finalists in an unenviable position with just one win from their five outings and Dhoni pointed his accusing finger at the bowlers for the team’s string of poor shows in the second edition of the Indian Premier League.
“I think the bowlers are letting us down,” a dejected Dhoni said after the match.
“We really need to come up with some ideas, maybe a few other combinations and test our bench strength,” Dhoni said.

With Adam Gilchrist and Herschelle Gibbs going great gun, Chennai bowlers had a forgettable outing today.

Lakshmipathy Balaji conceded 41 runs in 3.3 overs for his one wicket while Manpreet Gony gave away 20 runs in his only over, prompting Dhoni not to press him into service again.
Among others, Joginder Sharma bled 14 runs in his only over, while Albie Morkel conceded 29 in his three wicket-less over.

Dhoni didn’t spare the batsmen either and felt Chennai batters struggled in the middle overs.
“We are getting good start but have been struggling in the middle overs. Middle order is not clicking, we need to work on that as well,” said Dhoni.

Incidentally, Dhoni himself has not been in great form in the tournament so far. His counterpart Adam Gilchrist, meanwhile, had no such worry and credited his bowlers for restricting Chennai to 165.

“Chennai got off to a good start and I think we did well to pull them back. They looked like getting 180-190 but our bowlers just hung in.”

“RP Singh did cop some runs but he bowled an important last over and I think we did well,” he said.

Gilchrist, however, admitted that he erred in not allowing Pragyan Ojha complete his full quota of four overs.

“I think I made a mistake there. Ojha bowled two overs and took two important wickets (of Matthew Hayden and Dhoni) for just 11 runs. Maybe my mind got it wrong. He (Ojha) has done a great job in the tournament so far,” he said.

Gibbs, who was adjudged man-of-the-match for his unbeaten half-century, thanked his captain and said Gilchrist’s presence at the other end took pressure off his shoulder.

“In Twenty20, we are not expected to get our eyes in. But with Gilly going after it right from the first ball, there was no pressure and I could relax,” Gibbs said.

“We tried to made the maximum use of the first six overs. With Gilly going so well, I didn’t have much to do,” he said. (PTI)

Sublime Gibbs guides Deccan Chargers to win

Durban, April 27: Table-topper Deccan Chargers’ fairytale campaign continued in the second Indian Premier League with the Adam Gilchrist-led side edging out Chennai Super Kings by six wickets to maintain their clean slate here today.

Chasing 166, Deccan Chargers rode on Herschelle Gibbs’ (69 not out) second half-century of the tournament and captain Gilchrist’s buccaneering 44 off 19 balls to cruise to 169 for four in 19.3 overs to record their fourth win on the trot.

Put into bat, Chennai Super Kings had earlier posted 165 for six, courtesy Matthew Hayden’s belligerent 49 and Jacob Oram’s breezy unbeaten 41 down the order.
Gilchrist and Gibbs were clearly in a hurry to wrap up the match and with both the batsmen going after the bowlers, Chennai simply had no respite.

Gilchrist hit Lakshmipathy Balaji for back-to-back fours in the first over to signal his intention. The Chennai pacer had a chance to settle scores in the next over but Balaji grassed a difficult caught-and-bowled chance and Gilchrist was simply unstoppable as he hit the pacer for two sixes and a boundary in that productive over.

Gibbs, at the other end, matched his captain shot for shot, milking 20 runs of a Manpreet Gony over. Their association had yielded 67 runs in no time when Suresh Raina stopped them from running away with the match with double strikes.
Gilchrist perished at short third man in Raina’s first over and in his next, out-of-form VVS Laxman (4) was caught at the gully.

Rohit Sharma (18) and Dwayne Smith (12) fell in quick succession but Gibbs stayed till the end to guide the side to victory.

Earlier, Matthew Hayden muscled his way to a belligerent 49 while Jacob Oram hit a breezy unbeaten 41 as Chennai Super Kings posted 165 for six.

Adam Gilchrist won the toss and inserted the Super Kings and by the time the match was into its second ball, the Deccan captain had reasons to feel vindicated as the scoreless Parthiv Patel tickled Fidel Edwards to perish caught behind.

Deccan Chargers’ catching, however, was not upto the scratch. Dropping Hayden — Gilchrist did a favour to his former Australia teammate — and Suresh Raina, Azhar Bilakhia being the culprit on this occasion, in quick succession proved costly as the left-handed duo cobbled a 64-run stand to prop up Chennai.

Raina (25) celebrated the life with a huge six off RP Singh, a treatment he later meted out to Fidel Edwards. Hayden, who had warmed up with successive fours off RP Singh, looked determined to make the Deccan Chargers pay for their lapse as he cut and pulled with aplomb.
Rohit Sharma finally broke the stand in his maiden over, catching Raina off his own bowling.
Chennai skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni (22), largely subdued in the tournament so far, hit Venugopal Rao over the ropes but Pragyan Ojha snared both the Indian captain and Hayden in his second over.

Towards the end, Oram swelled the tally with his unbeaten 29-ball 41, studded with four fours and two successive sixes off a Shoaib Ahmed over. (PTI)

Daredevils looking to prey on Royals

Daredevils looking to prey on Royals

Riding high on the back of a three-match winning streak, Delhi Daredevils will be looking for an easy prey in title-holders Rajasthan Royals when they meet in the Indian Premier League (IPL) at the Centurion Park on Tuesday.

A week into the IPL and the Daredevils have emerged as one of the favourites while defending champions Rajasthan Royals are still struggling to find the winning touch that made them a formidable team last year.

The Shane Warne-led Rajasthan Royals have managed one win in three matches and that came against Kolkata Knight Riders through a Super Over. The absence of talented all-rounders Shane Watson of Australia and Pakistani Sohail Tanveer has hurt them badly.

Going by their last match’s performance where they lost to Kings XI Punjab, Rajasthan Royals will have to be on the top of their game against the formidable Daredevils.

The Daredevils, who made it to the semi-finals last year, are in a sparkling form, as all their wins have been convincing. A star-studded batting line-up and a balanced bowling attack, have been the key to success for Virender Sehwag’s team.

In Sehwag and Gautam Gambhir, Daredevils have two formidable openers who can crush the spirit of any bowling attack. But even if they fail, Daredevils can fall back on their strong middle-order which boast of players like Tillekaratne Dilshan and AB de Villiers. In the last two matches, Dilshan and De Villiers were the cornerstone of the Daredevils batting.

Dilshan has hit two consecutive half-centuries, seeing Daredevils through a difficult situation against Royal Challengers in the last match. De Villiers has scored the first century of the IPL, a whirlwind knock that flattened runners-up Chennai Super Kings in the second match.

Moreover, the bowling attack too seems to be in perfect shape. Left-arm spinner Daniel Vettori has been one of the top bowlers and has got enough support from leggie Amit Mishra to restrict the opposition.

Rajasthan Royals top-order has not fired. Graeme Smith is not among runs and last year’s star performer Swapnil Asnodkar is struggling to cope with the moving ball. They are losing wickets in heaps and it falls on Yousuf Pathan to shore up the batting.

IPL pair penalised for slow over rates

The Indian Premier League today announced that it had fined Adam Gilchrist and Sachin Tendulkar $20,000 each for slow over rates.

A decision in this regard was taken by match referee Devdas Govindjee from South Africa. Gilchrist, captain of Deccan Chargers and Tendulkar, the Mumbai Indians skipper were found guilty of slow overrates when they played each other at Kingsmead, Durban, on Saturday.

The Delhi Daredevils were also penalized for a similar slow over rate in their match against Chennai Super Kings on Thursday, April 23, 2009, held at the same venue.

American League sign Aussie recruits

The Indian Cricket League's Australian recruits Jason Gillispie and Damien Martyn are all set for a stint with yet another unauthorised Twenty20 event, having signed up with the American Premier League to be held in New York.

According to a report in 'The Age', Gillespie and Martyn have signed with the tournament, scheduled for October, promoted by entrepreneur Jay Mir, the president and chief executive of the American Sports and Entertainment Group.

If things go as planned, Gillespie will represent a Premium World team captained by Martyn, with other players from Australia, New Zealand, England and South Africa in the six-team competition.

"It's not competing with anyone, it's about cricket having some recognition in America, which is great for our sport," said Gillespie, who played for Ahmedabad team in IPL.

Cricket Australia warned players against joining the new American league as it was unauthorised cricket. "We would not be able to release our players to take part in it and any player who wanted to be a Cricket Australia contracted player would not be able to participate," a CA spokesman said. But Gillespie said he was not concerned about the CA or ICC's objections.

"For me, I'm effectively banned anyway from playing any first-class cricket so it (the opposition of the International Cricket Council) doesn't affect me in any way," Gillespie said.

"As an Australian who is coming towards the end of his career, I just think it's an exciting opportunity to spread the word in America and have a new experience," he added. Gillespie said he would have no trouble getting ICL's nod to compete in America so long as the schedules didn't clash.

"The ICL has very been very forward in saying, 'We don't have a problem with our players playing in other competitions, like County cricket or playing for their country, (and) if they choose to ban our players we can't do much about it'," he said.

"The first tournament is in October and if it happens that an ICL tournament goes ahead then of course I will play in ICL," he added.

Deccan Chargers win toss and bowl first

Deccan Chargers captain Adam Gilchrist won the toss and chose to bowl first against Chennai Super Kings in the 16th match of the second edition of the Indian Premier League at Kingsmead in Durban on Monday.

Deccan have included Azhar Bilakhia and Shoaib Ahmed, while for Chennai Jacob Oram comes in for Andrew Flintoff, who has gone back to England due to his knee injury.

Team Chennai, after looking like surefire winners in the first couple of games, are in a bit of a mess while Team Hyderabad, despite their poor performance last season, are going all guns blazing.

A defeat and a washout has left Dhoni's boys with no option but to go for the kill on Monday. They know if they slip-up now, things can start going downhill very soon. But there are two obstacles in the way — the Durban weather and Team Hyderabad.

Hyderbad are on a high, winning three matches in a row and have really looked a solid unit in the tournament so far, with all three departments complementing each other. If Gilchrist and Herschelle Gibbs have given them the starts they had been looking for, paceman Fidel Edwards and left-arm spinner Pragyan Ojha have led the two departments to perfection.

And for a team like Hyderabad, which has an abundance of talent, it's just a matter of things falling into place and skipper Gilchrist is happy that's exactly what is happening.

Teams:

Deccan Chargers: Adam Gilchrist (Capt.), Herschelle Gibbs, Dwayne Smith, VVS Laxman, Rohit Sharma, Vneugopal Rao, Azhar Bilakhia, RP Singh, Fidel Edwards, Shoaib Ahmed, Pragyan Ojha.

Chennai Super Kings: Mahendra Singh Dhoni (Capt.), Matthew Hayden, Parthiv Patel, Suresh Raina, Albie Morkel, Jacob Oram, Subramaniam Badrinath, Manpreet Gony, Joginder Sharma, Lakshmipathy Balaji, Muttiah Muralitharan.

Dilshan powers Delhi to 6-wicket win

Port Elizabeth, April 26: Bangalore Royal Challengers suffered their fourth defeat on the trot as Tillakaratne Dilshan (67 not out) struck his second successive half-century to guide Delhi Daredevils to a six-wicket win in their IPL match here today.

With this win, Delhi Daredevils are now level with Hyderabad Deccan Chargers at top of the table with both the teams having won all their three matches.

Daredevils rode on a flamboyant 47-ball 67 from Dilshan while Mithun Manhas (23), playing his first match of the tournament, made a useful contribution down the order to chase down Royal Challengers’ 149 for seven with four balls to spare.

Daredevils were in a spot of bother needing 43 from the last four overs. But the 17th over from Jacques Kallis fetched Daredevils 19 runs which included a dropped catch from Robin Uthhapa and the Delhi team were heading towards the victory.

Dilshan remained unbeaten as he clobbered five fours and a couple of sixes while Manhas played with urgency to strike 23 off just 13 balls.

For the Royal Challengers, Pankaj Singh grabbed the prized scalps of Gautam Gambhir (16) and Virender Sehwag (7) while left-arm spinner KP Appanna picked up de Villiers with a well flighted ball.

The famed opening pair of Sehwag and Gambhir once again failed to fire as the Daredevils’ captain was out in the dug out in just the second over.

However, last match’s centurian AB de Villiers (21) and Dilshan stitched a useful partnership of 42 runs and then a crucial inbroken fifth wicket stand of 44 sealed the fate of Daredevils.
Earlier, after electing to bat first, Royal Challengers were off to a horrendous start, which saw openers Kallis and Utthappa back in the hut in just the second over of the match, Bangalore Royal Challengers’ captain Kevin Pietersen and Ross Taylor put in 62 runs for the third wicket.
Kallis was out on the first ball of the innings off Dirk Nannes while Utthappa’s miserable form continued and was out to Ashish Nehra from just three runs.

Pietersen, who just has one more match to play in the IPL before he returns home, was looking good as he started to play his usual strokes which were lacking in the earlier matches.
The former England captain had put the paddle on the accelerator and was looking dangerous to take the game away from the Daredevils.

Pietersen struck a couple of boundaries and sixes to race to 25-ball 37 before he opted to play a switch hit off Daniel Vettori only to see his stumps rattled.

Till the time his captain was around, Taylor preferred to play a second fiddle to Pietersen but soon after Pietersen was out Kiwi batsman also followed him when he was trapped leg before off Amit Mishra.

Mishra was certainly the most dangerous of the lot as the leg-spinner, playing his first match of the season, was turning the ball big and the batsmen found difficult to negotiate him.
The leggie returned with figures of one for 19 off his four overs.

However, South African recruit Mark Boucher, who was drafted into the side due to Rahul Dravid’s absence, commbined with Virat Kohli (22) to provide Challengers the momentum it required.

Boucher played a valuable knock of 36 off 28 balls which included a couple of sixes in the second last over of the innings bowled by Pradeep Sangwan.

But the left-armer had the last laugh as he dismissed Boucher off the last ball of his quota to return with figures of one for 32 off four overs.

Nannes and Vettori too grabbed a wicket each while Nehra had two wickets to his name. (Agencies)

Flintoff returns to England, to undergo surgery

Durban, Apr 24 (PTI) In a big blow to last year's Indian Premier League runners-up Chennai Super Kings, England all-rounder Andrew Flintoff today returned home from South Africa for surgery on a tear on his right knee and is unlikely to come back for the T20 event.

Flintoff, who was bought for a record USD 1.55 million by the Super Kings, felt discomfort in his right knee during yesterday's IPL match against Delhi Daredevils.

The Chennai medical staff contacted the England and Wales Cricket Board medical officer Dr Nick Peirce following which a scan was carried out at a hospital here.

The scan revealed a slight medial meniscal tear in the knee and after going through the reports, Peirce felt Flintoff should return to England.

The 31-year-old will undergo a keyhole surgery early next week and is likely to recover within three to five weeks but that will force him to miss the IPL after playing just two matches.

"Clearly this is a huge disappointment for both the player and the IPL team. This sort of degenerative injury though is one that could have happened at any time anywhere," Peirce was quoted as saying on ECB's website.

"The procedures we put in place meant that the ECB medical staff were alerted about the problem immediately and we thank Chennai for their co-operation." PTI

New book on Tendulkar released on his 36th birthday

Mumbai, Apr 24 (PTI) A new book on champion batsman Sachin Tendulkar, who celebrates his 36th birthday today in South Africa where he is leading Mumbai Indians in the IPL, was released here to mark the occasion.

The book, titled 'If Cricket Is a Religion, Sachin is God', authored by two graduates of IIM (Ahmedabad), Vijay Santhanam and Shyam Balasubramaniam, was unveiled by billiards ace Geet Sethi and former India Test skipper Nari Contractor today.

Green baize master Sethi paid glorious tributes to Tendulkar and questioned the title of the book itself.

"No need to ask, cricket is a religion in our country and Tendulkar is the epitome of it. There's a huge visibility to Sachin, but I look beyond visibility. I look at his character and hunger (for the game)", Sethi said.

"He's one of the greatest sportspersons of our times and surely the finest cricketer of our times," the cue ace said.

Sethi said what was most remarkable about Tendulkar was the way he has handled himself and his fame right from his early teens.

"A guy like (Swedish tennis legend) Bjorn Borg quit the game at the age of 24, unable to handle the fame and money. PTI

Bopara gives Punjab their first win in IPL-II

Durban, Apr 24 (PTI) Ravi Bopara (84) led Kings XI Punjab's to their first victory in the second edition of the Indian Premier League as they defeated Royal Challengers Bangalore by a handsome seven-wicket margin here today.

The England batsman batted with patience initially and and turned explosive after reaching his half-century.

Bopara shared two crucial partnerships -- 52 for first wicket with Karan Goel and 66 for third wicket with Yuvraj Singh -- to give Punjab a lease of life in the tournament.

Chasing 169 to win, Punjab overhauled the target with one over to spare with Yuvraj finishing it off with a six off Jacques Kallis.

Before coming to this clash, Punjab had lost both of their matches as bad weather dented their chances on both the occasions.

Earlier, Jacques Kallis rescued the Bangalore side with a splendid 62 to help them overcome a mini top-order collapse and post a competitive 168 for nine after sent in to bat.

Yusuf Abudulla was star performer for the Punjab side with his four-wicket haul while Irfan Pathan (3/35) took three wickets. PTI

Strategy break in IPL triggers heated debate

Cape Town, April 20: The so-called “strategy breaks” lasting seven-and-half minutes in each innings played in the ongoing IPL has generated heated controversy with players and coaches saying it was a distraction and affects the flow of the match.

“Yes, we have done well in our last match but I think the strategy breaks are hampering the momentum of a team,” Mumbai Indians captain Sachin Tendulkar said.
“The seven-and-half minute breaks are a bit too long,” he observed.

Former player and ex-selector VB Chandrasekar, who heads Chennai Super Kings’ cricket operations, is also far from amused with the break.

“The 7-1/2 minute break after 10 overs is quite a distraction and comes in the way of valuable momentum...” Chandrasekar said.

Even though IPL Commissioner Lalit Modi has been insisting that the break was introduced to allow teams to strategise, most believe the innovation was aimed at providing the broadcaster extra slots for commercials.

Modi’s argument was that since the teams wasted lot of time strategising, most of the matches in IPL’s inaugural edition stretched beyond schedule. So, Modi argued, introducing the breaks would allow them to complete their strategising in the scheduled time and get on with the match.
Former South African Board President Ali Bacher, however, had no doubt that the breaks were introduced solely for commercial benefits. “The reality now is that cricket is a highly commercial entity. There is big money in cricket today, and much of it is emanating from India. The organisers are not only aiming to provide a fantastic spectacle for the spectators, but they are also there to maximise the revenues for the game,” he said.
Bacher, however, didn’t see anything wrong with that.

“You can’t fault them on that. The problem they have is, because of the shortened version of the game the number of ad breaks are less as compared to the one-dayers and Tests. So they are trying to get more airtime for more commercial ads to be placed,” he added.

On the other hand, Kings XI Punjab coach Tom Moody felt the break directly affected his team’s performance in the rain-marred match against the Delhi Daredevils yesterday.

“We had the momentum and we had seven and a half minutes to lose it,” Moody said.
“It was the perfect time for Daniel Vettori to come on and secure the momentum back in favour of Delhi,” the Australian said.

Bangalore Royal Challengers coach Ray Jennings, meanwhile, is more worried about the break’s effect on the viwers, who—he feared—might lose interest in the match.
“Spectators are the ones they need to be keeping their focus on during these breaks. What you need to do is check if this break is going to keep the spectators interested, because what do they do during these minutes?” Jennings asked.
Instead of airing commercials, Jennings suggested the time could be used otherwise to sustain viwers’ interest.

“The organisers could think of adding value to the entertainment by, maybe, doing interviews with four or five players in the change rooms, which can then be shown during these intervals. This is an opportunity for the officials to see this as a moment to catch up with people, and give them something they cannot get hold of: signing autographs or something” Jennings told Cricinfo.

Star spinner Harbhajan Singh also gave a thumbs down to the move and said, “I don’t think I am very happy with it. At times, when you are bowling well, you just lose your rhythm during the strategy breaks.” Former India spearhead Javagal Srinath had more or less the same thing to say about it.

“Technically, for the player it could be an advantage or disadvantage: if your team is not doing well, the break is very welcome as that helps stop the momentum of the opponents. But if your team is doing well, it may be seen as a hindrance, where you could lose your advantage. It is a new experiment and remains to be seen how it is expected. If it is a real pain, some changes may be carried out,” Srinath said.

Steve Elworthy, Tournament director of ICC World Twenty20, was not sure behind the reasons and hinted he was not impressed.

“I am not sure of the reasons behind it; whether it is commercial or for cricket-playing reasons. From our perspective, the idea is that the game needs to have that momentum. It needs to keep the pace and the momentum going. The playing conditions don’t stipulate for a break in this World Twenty20, and I would like to see the game continue, rather than being broken up all over,” he said. (PTI)

Blazing openers give Super Kings massive win

Port Elizabeth, April 20: Chennai Super Kings put back their title defence on track in a stunning fashion with a massive 92-run win over Bangalore Royal Challengers in an Indian Premier League match here today.

It was a commendable performance by the Chennai side who bounced back after a 19-run loss to Mumbai Indians in the IPL opening match.

Laxmipathi Balaji took two wickets while Manpreet Gony, Andrew Flintoff, Albie Morkel and Joginder Sharma chipped with one wicket each to throttle the Bangalore batsmen. Australian Matthew Hayden cracked a blistering 65 to help Chennai Super Kings post a commanding 179 for 5 in their Indian Premier League match against Bangalore Royal Challengers here today.

Set a huge target of 180 at nine per over, Bangalore were never in the chase with their top five gone in the eighth over for a mere 50 runs though the St George’s Park wicket has become more difficult to bat on than the first innings. They did not have any partnership either, their biggest being 40 between Robin Utthapa and Jacques Kallis for the second wicket.

The Chennai side began on a rollicking note with Matthew Hayden and Parthiv Patel sharing an opening stand off 106 after captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni elected to bat and that set the momentum of the innings.

The duo breezed away to 50 runs in just 29 balls with 20 runs coming from the fifth over bowled by Jacques Kallis with Hayden hitting three fours and a six.

Bangalore Royal Challengers gave away too many boundaries for their comfort with the run rate rising more than 10 and CSK reaching 106 for no loss after 10 overs with the help of 11 fours and three sixes.

The run rate slowed down latter on with some intelligent bowling by Bangalore bowlers but they failed to stop the CSK from posting the highest score of IPL second season so far, which was studded with 15 fours and six sixes.

Praveen Kumar was the most successful Bangalore bowler by taking two wickets and conceding 37 runs.

Kevin Pietersen first broke the opening partnership bowling Patel from his first ball for 30 (2X4; 1X6) before orchestrating run out of Hayden for 65.

Dhoni did not stay for long as he was out for 16 after facing 14 balls to give the first wicket to Praveen Kumar who also scalped Suresh Raina (28; 1X1 1X6), who was dropped by Dale Steyn when on 12.

Andrew Flintoff (22 off 13) gave some fireworks towards the end to take 14 runs off last over which also saw Albie Morkel dismissed. Brief Scores: Chennai Super Kings: 179 for 5 in 20 overs (Matthew Hayden 65, Parthiv Patel 30, Suresh Raina 28; Praveen Kumar 2/37).

Bangalore Royal Challengers: 87 all out in 15.2 overs (Jacques Kallis 24, Robin Utthapa 20; Muttiah Muralitharan 3/11). (PTI)

IPL-2 will be low-scoring: Wessels

CAPE TOWN: The second edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) will not be as high scoring as the inaugural tournament in India because the pitches in South Africa will assist the bowlers, feels former Proteas captain Kepler Wessels.

Wessels said the weather and pitch conditions, especially during April and May, would be bowler-friendly.

"The extra bounce on the pitches will influence the scoring pattern. The bowlers are going to play a much bigger role in this year's tournament," Wessels was quoted as saying in the Afrikaans daily Beeld on Saturday.

Batsmen ruled the roost last year, with team scoring 200 runs or more 11 times, and between 180 and 200 on 15 occasions. There was no dearth of fours and sixes on the batsmen-friendly Indian wickets. The figure is startling - 1,702 fours and 622 sixes struck in 59 matches - one of the factors that made IPL a huge hit.

However, it will not be the same this time around.

Wessels said Indian batsmen have difficulty playing on bouncy wickets. A lot of young Indians will be playing outside the subcontinent for the first time and they might face difficulty in adjusting to the wicket. This could have an impact because only four foreigners are allowed per team.

He said the Indian bowlers, too, will take time to hit the right length on pacy tracks.

"There will be some younger Indian players who are going to battle, but there will also be outstanding performances from the Indian ranks," he said.

Wessels said Bangalore Royal Challengers, who finished last in the inaugural edition, would be the team to watch out for.

"I think (Bangalore) Royal Challengers are now a dangerous Twenty20 unit. Dale Steyn on home ground is going to make a lot of difference for them," said Wessels, who was the coach for the Chennai Super Kings last year.

Wessels was also sceptical about the chances of defending champions Rajasthan Royals: "I think the loss of (Australian) Shane Watson and (Pakistani) Sohail Tanvir will leave a huge gap."

India's T20 team doesn't need me, says Tendulkar

CAPE TOWN: A lazy Sunday morning, the first hurdle crossed, and Sachin Tendulkar was in the mood. He had come down to for a commercial event in the team hotel and with a handful of media persons around, Tendulkar seemed to be opening his heart out.

Going back to his childhood days when he used to pick his own fantasy team with Sunil Gavaskar and Viv Richards as certainties, to why he is not playing international T20 cricket, Tendulkar was ready to play every ball.

After so many years of international cricket, is there a special feeling after showing the world, along with Rahul Dravid, that T20 cricket can also be played in a different vein? Sachin agreed, but only to a certain extent.

"This was probably my most satisfying T20 innings. But neither me, nor Rahul, have anything more to prove to the world.

We play just for the love of it," Tendulkar said with a smile hanging on his lips.

"All my life, I have played according to the situation. Yesterday, on a difficult wicket, the team wanted me to buckle down and bat through and I did just that," Tendulkar said, talking about his unbeaten 59 that won Mumbai Indians the opener against Mahendra Singh Dhoni’s Team Chennai.

Probably, his son Arjun was more excited about the innings than the man himself. "Arjun was saying quite a few things...he was actually excited," Sachin joked.

Had he been 25, Tendulkar would surely have liked to play international T20 cricket, but not now, not anymore.

"I backed out of 2007 T20 World Cup because my body was not 100 per cent. I just didn’t want to be a burden on the team," he said.

But now that he is in such great form, why is he so adamant about not playing the T20 World Cup? "No point. This Indian team has gelled quite beautifully as a unit and there’s no need why I should be playing T20 cricket," Tendulkar added.

Not that Tendulkar dislikes the T20 format, but there’s something about it which can’t make him take it too seriously. Not that he would say it in as many words, but Tendulkar made it clear that technique doesn’t really matter too much in T20 cricket.

"If you play some of the T20 shots in Test cricket, you’ll be sitting there in the dressing-room for the next two days. But here you get runs for the same shot."

Is Chelsy Davy dating cricketer Graeme Smith?

London, Apr 20 (PTI) It is barely three months that they broke-up but it seems that Prince Harry and Chelsy Davy have moved on in life.

While Harry was spotted with glamourous TV presenter Caroline Flack, his former girlfriend Chelsy Davy is also not pining for him.

The 23-year-old Davy has been spending time with South African cricket captain, 28-year-old Graeme Smith.

Davy is according to many, the "spitting image" of Smith's previous girlfriend model Minki van der Westhuizen.

"Chelsy is so like Minki and they have the same friends in South Africa. Chelsy and Graeme have been to the Bang Bang club together twice and she has had Graeme over at her apartment. They are extremely close," the source told Daily Mail.

"Chelsy is still very fond of Harry but she cant go on waiting for ever," the source added. PTI

I felt like a teenager coming into new season, says Gilly

Cape Town, Apr 20 (PTI) He might have dropped the curtains on his international career more than a year back, but Deccan Chargers skipper Adam Gilchrist said he still feels like a teenager who can't wait for the cricket season to start.
The former Australian wicket-keeper batsman, who bid adieu to his international career in January last year, said he didn't play much competitive cricket after the inaugural edition of the Indian Premier League and was nervous ahead of their opening encounter against Kolkata Knight Riders which they comprehensively won by eight wickets last night.

"When I was a 14-year-old we had one season off and used to wait for another season to play cricket," he said.

Apart from lauding his team-mates for the victory, Gilchrist also showered praise on coach and fellow Australian Darren Lehman, saying the left-hander had played a key role in resurrecting the fortunes of the Hyderabad outfit who finished at the bottom of the IPL table last year.

The 37-year-old dashing Aussie feels his predecessor in Deccan Chargers team, VVS Laxman will have a major role to play in difficult South Africa turfs.

"He is an experienced campaigner. We all know about his achievements in Test cricket. The pitches here will suit Laxman's style of play. He likes the ball coming onto the bat and loves playing those elegant shots while taking his own time," Gilchrist said. PTI

Vettori is best spinner present in the world: Sehwag

Cape Town, Apr 20 (PTI) Delhi Daredevils skipper Virender Sehwag has put Daniel Vettori in the same league as legendary spinners Shane Warne and Anil Kumble and said the New Zealand skipper is the best tweaker in the world at present.

Sehwag lavished praise on his Daredevils team-mate Vettori for his magical spell last night in the match against Kings XI Punjab which the Delhi outfit won comprehensively by 10 wickets in Duckworth Lewis method.

"At the moment Daniel (Vettori) is the best spinner in the world," Sehwag said.

Vettori was adjudged man-of-the for his match figures of three wickets for 15 runs and it was this spell that shifted the momentum in the Daredevils favour.

"The Kings XI Punjab were going great guns when I asked Danny (Daniel Vettori) to bowl and thanks to him we were successful in getting the crucial wickets," Sehwag said, adding the left-arm spinner has the ability to bowl well on any all sort of wickets. PTI

IPL fails to live up to hype

IPL fails to live up to hype

New Delhi, Apr 20 (PTI) The much-hyped Indian Premier League season II is struggling to attract eyeballs, with viewership tracking agencies reporting lesser numbers this year as it tries to overcome rain-curtailed and low scoring matches, over and above competition from elections.

According to viewership research agency aMap, the first match of IPL II managed only 3.6 per cent ratings against 4.3 per cent last year. However, it reported better viewership on the second day at 3.9 per cent and 3.5 per cent as against 2.9 and 3.4 last year.

Similarly, according to another viewership rating agency TAM, the TRP for the two matches on the first day of IPL II was at 5.55 per cent and 5.54 per cent, as against 8.21 per cent last year (only one match was played on day one of IPL 2008).

"There could be two-three factors why the rating has gone down. There are lots of other activities like the general election happening besides the IPL. This to an extent distracts the audience. Apart from that, there was novelty value of the first season," aMap CEO Amit Verma told PTI.

A TAM official, however, said it is too early to say why the rating has gone down. PTI

Port Elizabeth, Apr 20 (PTI) Chennai Super Kings bounced back after their opening match defeat in a stunning fashion with a massive 92-run win over Bangalore Royal Challengers in an Indian Premier League match here today.
The Chennai side first rattled up a huge 179 for five, riding on Australian Matthew Hayden's blistering 35-ball 65 and then bundled out Bangalore for just 87 in 15.2 overs.

It was a commendable performance by the Chennai side who bounced back after a 19-run loss to Mumbai Indians in the IPL opening match.

Hayden, who retired from international cricket early this year, was at his dominating best picking gaps at will to reach his third IPL fifty in just 22 balls and in the process helping the Chennai side to the highest Twenty20 score on St George's Park here.

If Hayden was the batsman around whom the Chennai innings built on after captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni won the toss, it was Sri Lankan spin wizard who bamboozled the Bangalore batsmen with his variation and turns as he returned with figures of 3/11 from four overs.

Laxmipathi Balaji took two wickets while Manpreet Gony, Andrew Flintoff, Albie Morkel and Joginder Sharma chipped with one wicket each to throttle the Bangalore batsmen. PTI

RP Singh hopeful of return to Indian team

CAPE TOWN: Pacer RP Singh on Sunday said his four wicket haul for Deccan Chargers in the Indian Premier League match against Kolkata Knight Riders will boost his confidence in his quest to bounce back into the Indian team.

"Definitely, it will boost my confidence. I am fit and hope to bounce back into the (Indian) team, let's see," he said after his four for 22 effort which set up Chargers' eight wicket victory over Knight Riders here.

RP Singh was happy that he got the swing and bounce from the Newlands pitch.

"The wicket has something for the bowlers. I got the swing and bounce. It is better than the pitches in India I am happy," he added.

The Uttar Pradesh pacer, who won the man of the match award for his 4/22, was all praise for West Indian teammate Fidel Edwards who bowled real quick and with accuracy to concede just six runs from four overs though without success.

"Fidel was amazing. He bowled real quick and accurate he set up the tone for us," RP added.

Delhi Daredevils thrash Kings XI Punjab by 10 wickets

CAPE TOWN: If Preity Zinta hasn’t been doing a lot of movies recently, you can blame that on the IPL. Cricket seems to have caught the imagination of the actress to such an extent that she’s also started brushing up her knowledge of the intricacies of the game.

Moving on from cheering Yuvraj Singh’s sixes and jumping up from her seat when a six or four is hit, the lady has now decided to learn what Duckworth-Lewis is all about.

On Sunday, she had to wait for one hour and 15 minutes because of the rain before watching Kings XI bat. The game had been reduced from 20 to 12 overs.

Preity tried to understand details like how the truncated version would affect the bowling side and how many overs each bowler would get.

In the end, when Team Delhi cantered to a 10-wicket win, required to score merely 30 runs from 25 balls, she was close to tears but better educated about the glorious uncertainties of the game.

The day began on a grim note with a continuous downpour. When the possibility of play appeared, the coin went in favour of Delhi, who elected to field first.

Openers Ravinder Bopara and Karan Goel walked out and blasted 67 runs for the first wicket, which came in the first six overs. If it wasn’t for New Zealand skipper and left-arm spinner Daniel Vettori, Delhi were easily watching the game slip away. Vettori’s three wickets turned the tide and Punjab never recovered.

In the end, Kings XI set Delhi a competitive target of 104 off 12 overs at an asking rate of 8.67. Virender Sehwag and Gautam Gambhir walked out and got going at 14 runs per over and by the time rain halted play again, the D/L method was asking Delhi to score a mere 30 runs from 25 balls. The rest remained merely a formality for the dashing Delhi duo.

The 26-year-old Yusuf Abdullah from Johannesburg, who was bought by Kings XI to replace Sreesanth, bore the brunt when Sehwag belted him for 19 runs in a single over.

MoM: Daniel Vettori

The star off-spinner lived up to his reputation as one of the most economical bowlers in T20 cricket.

His three overs went for just 15 runs and the New Zealand skipper consumed three wickets too, scalping Bopara first and then the dangerous Kumar Sangakkara and Mahela Jayawardene.

Kings XI went after him to up their run rate and paid dearly. It was the kind of spell that effectively changed the game. Vettori's judgement about flight and length was, as usual, spot on.

Vettori, rain help Delhi win over Kings XI Punjab

CAPE TOWN, April 19 (PTI): Daniel Vettori and rain gods helped Delhi Daredevils score a comprehensive 10-wicket win over extremely unlucky Kings XI Punjab in their rain-curtailed Indian Premier League match here today.

Rain played spoilsport as it denied Kings XI Punjab a fighting chance since Duckworth-Lewis calculations tilted the match heavily in favour of the Delhi Daredevils, who were set an easy target of 30 runs from 25 balls.

The target was set when play resumed after the second rain-interruption. Earlier delayed start had reduced the match first to 14 and then to 12 overs per side.

Chasing 105 to win, Delhi raced away to 24 for no loss in 1.5 overs when skied opened yet again.

Virender Sehwag (38) and Gautam Gambhir (15) returned to crease and scored the required 30 runs without any fuss.

Thanks to a splendid start by openers Karan Goel (38) and Ravi Bopara (22), Punjab side had scored a modest 104 for seven after sent in to bat at Newlands ground.

The Yuvraj Singh side was taking huge strides towards a massive score at one stage but Vettori’s exceptional bowling spell changed the complexion of the game.

It was Kiwi spinner who kept his side in the hunt as he not only stopped the run flow but dealt three huge blows to send shock-waves to the rival camp.

Even as the Kings XI Punjab were not in a commanding position yet they had a score to at least put up a fight.

Rain played hide and seek and delayed the start of the match by about 90 minutes. First the match was reduced to 14 overs from 20 but immediate rain after toss forced umpires to further reduce it to 12 overs per side.

Punjab openers Goel and Bopara provided a flying start to their side, rattling up the first 50 runs in just 4.3 overs.

The duo added 67 for the first wicket before being separated exactly at the half-way of their innings.

Vettori (3/15) bowled an exceptional spell to stem the run-flow as he accounted for three Punjab batsmen after Yo Mahesh had drawm the first blood.

The run-outs of skipper Yuvraj Singh (16) and Piyush Chawla (0) only worsened the matter for the Kings XI side as they failed to build on a brilliant start.

Left-handed Goel began with a fluent square cut boundary off Dirk Nannes and then hit Avishkar Salvi for consecutive boundaries to set the momentum. Bopara, the England batsman, joined the party, swinging his arms to maximum effect, as he hit two massive sixes off Pradeep Sangwan’s successive overs.

Hardly left with any option than to throw bat at each and everything under the conditions, Goel took Yo Mahesh for some special treatment reeling off three sixes – two from his second over – from his medium pace.

However, Yo Mahesh had the last laugh when Goel holed up to Vettori at mid-off in the last ball of the same over, bringing skipper Yuvraj to the crease.

Vettori trapped Bopara in the next ball, dealing the second blow to Punjab team and gave away just one run in his first over. ASSAM TRIBUNE

90 per cent IPL tickets sold: Lalit Modi

CAPE TOWN, April 17 (PTI): Indian Premier League chairman Lalit Modi claims 90 per cent of the tickets for the cash-rich Twenty20 event starting tomorrow have been sold at the eight venues.

“The ticket prices had been aimed at filling the stadiums,” Modi said at a press conference ahead of the event which will start with Chennai Super Kings taking on Mumbai Indians.

Modi said although the IPL would be returning to India next year, the long-term vision was to turn it into a global brand, much the same way as the English Football Premier League.

“Spectators will see the world’s best players playing competitive cricket and it is made more compelling because of the competitive instincts of the players,” he said.

The IPL chief said an important aspect of the marketing of the competition was advertising and Rand 120 million (USD 10 million) have been earmarked to attract spectators to the games.

The organisers are also spending time on local radio stations, introducing the players in the eight teams.

Rajasthan Royals axe Mohammad Kaif

NEW DELHI: The Rajasthan Royals, which won last year's inaugural Indian Premier League (IPL) Twenty20 tournament, has axed former Test player and Uttar Pradesh captain Mohammad Kaif and seven other players from the squad that will do duty in the second edition. ( Watch )

They will now fly back to India. Kaif was purchased for a hefty $675,000 US at the auction last year, but didn't have much of a role during the victorious campaign.

Kaif had played all the matches last year, but could manage only 176 runs at an average of just 16. He didn't make a single half century, largely because he was shunted lower down the order. The 28-year-old Kaif has played 13 Tests and 125 One-dayers for India so far, reports said.

IPL II a record-breaking logistical exercise: Modi

CAPE TOWN: Setting up the 2009 IPL tournament in South Africa inside three weeks has been a logistical task unparalleled in world sport, IPL Chairman and Commissioner Lalit Modi said on Thursday.

Speaking at a news conference, Modi said one of the most challenging aspects of the league organisation had been getting the schedule right.

"My team finalised the schedule within 48 hours of arriving in South Africa. We started out having to schedule a league season of 56 games with each team playing the other seven on a home and away basis - plus three days of play-offs - in eight venues over a total of 37 days.

"There had to be an equal number of games per team in the main centres, no conflict with other major sports and cultural events and team and television production travel schedules had to be taken into account.

Expressing his pleasure at the way things had worked out, Modi was also lauded local authorities: "Government at national, provincial and local levels had been exceptionally accommodating, while the Cricket SA had welcomed the IPL with open arms and made its world-class stadiums available."

Giving some statistics to back up the claim to a record-breaking logistical event, Modi said about 700 people were currently working full time in South Africa on the IPL, including an enormous team that has relocated from India to South Africa.

This includes the Central IPL and IMG event team of 60, a television and digital media crew of over 200, the eight team franchises bringing about 30 playing staff each along with 20 coaching staff, executives and team owners for each team.

In South Africa, a range of companies were engaged over the course of several days at the end of March to provide security, broadcast support, PR and advertising, event management, entertainment, travel, hospitality and ticket sales.

Modi believes holding the IPL in South Africa will bring with it tremendous economic benefits. "If we look at some of the key statistics it is clear to me that the economic benefits should be significant."

Modi cited the total of 22,000 hotel rooms that have been booked with Southern Sun Hotels, 10 000 domestic flight bookings made and the millions of rands expected to be spent on tickets, food and beverage, transport and merchandise sales.

"We also expect large groups of Indian tourists will come to South Africa to watch at least several games each," Modi concluded.

FIFA can learn from the IPL in event hosting: Modi

FIFA can learn from the IPL in event hosting: Modi

CAPE TOWN (South Africa): IPL commissioner Lalit Modi is ready for Saturday's opening ceremony and said the speed of preparations should inspire FIFA in its struggles to organize football's Confederations Cup in June and the 2010 World Cup.

The Twenty20 Indian Premier League was hastily moved out of India just over three weeks ago for security reasons as the dates clashed with general elections. But organizers believe they've met the logistical challenges of preparing eight stadiums at short notice, booking thousands of hotel rooms, and laying on extra flights into South Africa.

"FIFA has been working here for 8 years, we have been here for 22 days," Modi said. "I hope they learn from us. We will have a carnival that we will talk about and remember."

The eight-team, 59-match tournament will bring a touch of Bollywood glamor to South Africa as world cricket's biggest names team up with movie stars. Indian megastar Shah Rukh Khan owns the Kolkata Knight Riders, while actresses Shilpa Shetty and Preity Zinta are the respective co-owners of the Rajasthan Royals and the Kings XI Punjab franchises.

"In this time in recession, the two things that won't go out of style are entertainment and sport, and it is great for us," Shetty said.

The players include leading test run-scorer Sachin Tendulkar (Mumbai Indians), former England captain Kevin Pietersen (Royal Challengers Bangalore), South Africa skipper Graeme Smith and former Australia legspinner Shane Warne (Rajasthan Royals).

"In India, cricket and film are religions and the blending of the two is quite exciting," Zinta said.

The IPL is already the world's richest cricket league and Modi hopes to emulate English football's Premier League by attracting the very best players and a multinational array of supporters from all over the world.

Modi said hosting the tournament in South Africa was a "huge opportunity to build up the IPL as a global brand" and would bring in an additional 1.5 billion to 2 billion rands ($150-200 million) to the local economy.

Team Delhi: One of the strongest

Team Delhi: One of the strongest

On paper, Team Delhi undoubtedly starts as one of the strongest teams in the IPL fray, in spite of their blow hot-blow cold performance last season.

In 2008, they looked top-heavy and fragile in the middle. Although Gautam Gambhir and Virender Sehwag are the most feared opening combine around, the franchise has taken steps to bolster the weak middle by roping in Paul Collingwood and Owais Shah.

Add to that an in-form AB De Villiers and Shoaib Malik's absence will hardly be noticed. Shikhar Dhawan has been sacrificed too but rookie T20 sensation David Warner is expected to more than make up.

Don't be surprised if you even see Warner opening the innings in a few games. Then there's Manoj Tiwary who looks keen to make more of an impression this time and will be hoping to be a regular in the XI.

There are a few handy allrounders apart from Collingwood and lower-middle hitting options in Daniel Vettori, Tillekeratne Dilshan, Ferveez Maharoof and Andrew McDonald.

On the bowling front, a slew of new signings are expected to offset Mohammad Asif's unavailability. The onus is still on Glenn McGrath to deliver with the new ball but there's ample back up in Ashish Nehra, Aussie left-arm seamer Dirk Nannes, Victoria's McDonald, promising Vidarbha pacer Umesh Yadav and of course, the presence of T20's most economical spinner, Vettori himself. Then there's Yo Mahesh, Maharoof and last year's hat-trick hero Amit Mishra.

In: David Warner, Ashish Nehra, Dirk Nannes, Andrew Mcdonald, Paul Collingwood, Owais Shah, Umesh Yadav.

Out: Brett Geeves, Shikhar Dhawan, Shoaib Malik, Mohammad Asif

Mumbai Indians: Mission possible

Bought by Mukesh Ambani's Reliance for $111.9m, Mumbai Indians happened to not only be the costliest team in the IPL, but also the most exciting
one.

After all, who didn't want to watch Sachin Tendulkar and Sanath Jayasuriya open the innings in a T20 game! The Tendulkar-led side featured 'Turbanator' Harbhajan Singh too. However, the script went awry and ultimately Mumbai were denied a semifinal spot.

The franchisees admitted they had learnt much from last year's experience, and went about taking what they think, were corrective measures.

The domestic players were sent to South Africa for training, which should now turn into a big advantage considering that the IPL is now being held there.

Shaun Pollock retired as a player, but has now turned into a mentor. Coach Lalchand Rajput was sacked and replaced by Pravin Amre to be the link between Pollock and the Indian domestic players.

The fielding coach's responsibility has been entrusted to Jonty Rhodes, ending Sameer Dighe's tenure as well.

At the February auction, South African batting sensation JP Duminy, Bangladesh skipper Mohammad Ashraful, New Zealand fast bowler Kylie Mills and English batsman Graham Napier were picked up.

Reputations at stake

Had it been 10 years back, I would have cracked it (T20 format) easy," was Rahul Dravid’s caustic response after a rare Royal Challengers win in the Indian Premier League last season.

In that one line, Dravid probably said it all, not just for himself but for his old friend Sourav Ganguly as well. The two stalwarts of Indian cricket, who incidentally are icons of Royal Challengers and Kolkata Knight Riders respectively, are finding out that time has probably run out for them when it comes to T20 cricket.

The two supreme batsmen have just not been able to keep pace with the blitz of T20 cricket and the IPL has brought in nothing but humiliation, which the two probably didn’t deserve at this stage of their careers.

While Dravid has been replaced as RCB captain by the maverick Kevin Pietersen, KKR coach John Buchanan is adamant that he doesn't want Ganguly to be the sole authority of his team.

The bottomline is that the two team managements simply don't want Dravid or Ganguly to be automatic choices in the squad. In the world of 'perform or perish', there's no place for players just because they form an emotional connect with the fans of a particular city.

The tournament being shifted to South Africa has only helped the owners' cause and a couple of slip-ups on the bouncy tracks of South Africa will surely mean the end of the road in the IPL for Dravid and Ganguly.

The 'icon' tag, though, doesn't weigh so heavily on the Little Master. Sachin Tendulkar was nowhere near his best in the last IPL, nor did his team, Mumbai Indians, make the semifinals. But not a finger was pointed at Tendulkar.

It has probably got a lot to do with the belief that Tendulkar can do whatever he pleases. The Mumbai maestro has made it clear that he won't play international T20 cricket but there's bound to be a burning desire within to show the world that this is child's play for a man with 85 international centuries.

Sachin, though, has nothing to prove, but a couple of other icons have.

The world knows how dangerous Virender Sehwag and Yuvraj Singh can be, but this IPL will test the leadership abilities of the duo.

A true icon has to be an inspiration for the team and that's exactly what Kings XI Punjab and Team Delhi are looking for from these two. Sehwag has shown glimpses of being a good captain, but in this tournament, he really has to assume the role of a mentor.

There are young players like David Warner and Manoj Tiwary, who will look to Sehwag for inspiration and it's up to the Delhi dasher to put them on the right track.

The IPL, in a way, will prove whether Sehwag has the spark in him to be long-term deputy for MS Dhoni in the national side.

Yuvraj, on the other hand, is not a tested captain. While every Indian still fondly remembers Yuvi's exploits in the T20 World Cup in South Africa, Kings XI supporters will hope to see the maverick left-hander shape up into a tactful leader as well.

Yuvraj has a canny coach in Tom Moody to help him and the IPL may well see the birth of a Yuvraj, who is not just a brilliant batsman and a superb fielder, but a true icon as well.
